Outpost X

I had the privilege of visiting Outpost X in southern Utah. A sci-fi themed glamping experience, I also used the opportunity to practice on my photography skills.

Aside from photography, I also enjoy 3D printing and brough a few of my items as a donation for Outpost X. In the middle of the desert and located on a dry lake bed, it gives the illusion of a vast expanse of sand that truly benefitted the desert lizard of Tatooine. Also benefitting from learning about aperture to give a blurred background, I felt it gave an excellent feel to the image.

Sunset and Golden Hour are always key times, lasting only a short while to get epic images. Key backlighting and a strong silhouette can make any image epic, such as this Mandalorian holding the skull of a Trandoshan. With low light in the back and mountains in the distance, we can only imagine what is going through the bounty hunter’s mind.

Night itself is also a great time for images. With low light I was able to take some of my first astrophotography images away from the city lights. With a prop of the lunar lander available, it can easily be believed that this was an image taken on another world. Though I lack the skills at this time to get excellent Milky Way shots, it was still a shot I am proud of.

But stunning landscapes and the appeal of nature still does not compare to human interactions, and it is always exciting to meet new people. I was privileged to have gone at the same time as a couple that traveled together with juggling and hula-hoop acts, bringing out LED lit hoops and pins at night. This magical shot, exposed for only a few seconds, shows the skill of Kati Rose Hicks using dual hoops. Follow her Instagram @katiro5e
