<image:title>BLOG - Winter Waterfalls - With winter, the snow and ice can really add elements to the waterfalls you cannot see during the rest of the year. With the soft mist freezing onto the surrounding areas, ice shelfs form with chunks of clear ice that can be several inches thick. The mixture of frozen and flowing water is truly a sight to behold, and unlike summer it can only be seen in certain conditions even during the coldest of temperatures. Even with the incredible views, the hikes to and from the waterfalls can themselves be much more of a challenge. With the sun unable to touch the trail, soft snow becomes hard, almost like the ice that is so appealing to look at. Slips and falls make for a more dangerous situation to and from the destination, having slipped several times to obtain these shot and landing squarely on my elbow, but the results and experience of the sights is well worth it.</image:title>

<image:title>BLOG - Winter Waterfalls - I have hiked these waterfalls several times, and am thankful for the waterproof boots that I found. With the lower water levels of fall and winter, I have been able to traverse into the middle of the stream and position myself to get excellent shots that most people try to avoid. With the water only a few degrees above freezing, any slipup would be less than ideal without a change of clothing.</image:title>
<image:caption>I will always enjoy these waterfalls, and plan on visiting several times during the year. I have seen them in a standard fall during the autumn months, and surrounded by chunks of ice several inches thick and yet able to see the branches and rocks beneath clearly. The elegance of icicles lined up in rows also adds to the beauty of the scene, reinforcing the time of the year. I look forward to visiting these sites in Spring, when the frozen areas higher up the mountains will melt and the waterfalls shall show their true grandeur. But as with so many other things in photography, patience is the key. A time and a place for everything, careful planning, and sometimes even plain luck. But even those lucky shots will be useless unless you have planned for them and are prepared to engage the moment. A lucky shot combined with your skill will often yield excellent results.</image:caption>

      <image:title>BLOG - The Long Exposure</image:title>
<image:caption>During the autumn months, the runoff from snow in the mountains is not as much but still offers a unique perspective with fallen leaves that add pops of color that are not seen during any other time of the year. For these images, I do have to get off the beaten track, often literally. Using waterproof boots and my tripod to their full advantage, I leave the main trail and often step directly into the center of the stream. After careful framing and setting up the shot, I take several images to determine which one is the most ideal for presentation. I have become quite fond of photographing these water features, discovering along the way what works and what doesn’t, adjusting my own style and what I want to convey. Dozens of images are often taken until I finally see one that I would be happy to present and hang on my wall, but the others are not failures. True, I do generally delete them, but it was the learning experience from them that I remember.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It is not only about the stream itself, but also the surrounding plant life that can make an interesting image. The fern not only makes the image more dynamic, but adds to the overall feel of the image. Helping to frame it and place the setting of where this stream is located, and how some plants grow closer to water instead of next to the trail.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - Change your view - As I started in the main museum, I was passing underneath the skeleton of a Torvosaurus. At one precise angle, the ceiling light shone through the holes where the eye sockets were located. Carefully positioning my camera, I was able to line up the shot and give an eerie ghost-like feel with an illuminated eye. Rather than an empty skull, this gave an illusion that the spirit of the animal was still present within the bones.</image:title>

<image:title>BLOG - Change your view - While going through the park itself, several opportunities presented themselves. Why should I photograph just individual statues? Shouldn’t I show more of the environment? How should I convey the statues as creatures? I adjusted my angle, looking not only at the dinosaur statue in front of me, but also the surrounding statues and those in the background. My first opportunity came with a smaller dinosaur with two Ceolophysis in the background. By positioning myself lower, directly in front of the closest statue, I positioned myself so that it appeared to be fleeing the two predators just making themselves over the rise of the hill. This added an element of excitement, giving a more lifelike appearance rather than static statues, it almost made them feel alive.</image:title>

<image:title>BLOG - Change your view - Another opportunity presented itself as I traversed deeper into the park. After a few individual photographs of the green Allosaurus, I made my way around the trail and toward an Ankylosaurus statue. A few individual shots of that, and I noticed the framing of the Allosaurus in the background could be used to my advantage. Despite living in different eras, I believe the image worked well. Here, I found that the Allosaurus, camouflaged green within the trees, was stalking its prey. The Ankylosaurus, sensing danger, sinks low with its clubbed tail at the ready should any aggression occur. An ominous predator in the background with the cautious prey up front.</image:title>

<image:title>BLOG - Change your view - While the park takes pride with the accurate dinosaur statues, several remain outdated. And while Deinonychus is indeed my favorite dinosaur, I always shake my head when I pass by a duo in a grossly outdated position that appear more like monkeys. With upright positions and oversized arms and hands, I couldn’t help but feel a degree of stress trying to make them look good. Alas, I did remember the original “Walking with Dinosaurs” documentary where two Utahraptors entered the shot. First one, then another with the focus shifting. Focusing on the heads rather than the entire body, I was able to capture the next image. Upon showing it to the park’s main educator, he commented that he did not think anything would make those two statues look good, and yet my image managed to pull it off. A great compliment, and worthwhile experience.</image:title>

<image:title>BLOG - Change your view - A final image, I got low. Very low. Being just after noon, I found myself passing by another Raptor with the sunlight passing through the trees above. It was an opportunity I could not pass up, seeing as the sun would move from that position and I would not be able to return later in the day for the same effect. The low angle conveyed a sense of power and authority that the Raptor held, while maintaining the state of awe of a creature approaching from a bygone era.</image:title>
